Mercedes-Benz Working On Smaller Capacity Engines
Mercedes-Benz is working on smaller capacity engines for the global market. The two new engines will be 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre powertrains and powered by petrol.
Mercedes-Benz is working on smaller capacity engines. Sources say that the German luxury carmaker will bring 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre petrol four-cylinder powertrains and will be laid out transversely.
The reason behind smaller capacity engines from Mercedes-Benz is to offer cars with better fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emission.
The two new engines have been codenamed M282 and are expected to power the next-generation A-Class, which will go on sale by the middle of 2018. In the future, the M282 engines could be employed to power other smaller Mercedes-Benz car with front wheel drives like the B-Class, CLA and the GLA.
Mercedes-Benz in partnership with Renault-Nissan is developing the new M282 engines. There is a possibility, these engines might be used in the new compact SUV from Mercedes-Benz which might call it the GLB.
The smaller capacity engines from Mercedes-Benz might not be utilised in the bigger Mercedes cars and do not feature in the hybrid engines as well.
There are also reports that there is another engine which is being developed for the A-Class, codenamed M260 and will be available in 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre. The latter will be used by AMG and employed in AMG cars such as CLA 45 AMG, GLA 45 AMG and the A 45.
In India, Mercedes-Benz was the most hit when the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned vehicles over 2,000cc. Mercedes-Benz India's product line-up consisted of vehicles more than 2000cc engines.
Hence the need for smaller capacity engines from Mercedes-Benz is the right path ahead.
