'OK Google, Start My Mercedes' — Mercedes-Benz Takes Voice Command To The Next Level
German automaker Mercedes-Benz now offers virtual assistants to help the driver with car related issues. Customers should install Google Hone or Amazon Alexa to use this feature.
German car maker Mercedes-Benz now offers virtual assistants to help the driver with car related issues. Now you can ask Google or Amazon's digital assistants to start your car remotely.
On a longer term, Mercedes-Benz will offer its virtual assistant inside the car. The researchers are still planning what needs to be controlled by voice commands and how long will it take to add this feature.
Previously, Mercedes-Benz enabled the use of Google and Amazon assistants. Customers who own the device need to install the Google Home or Amazon Alexa app and connect to Mercedes Me account.
Apart from locking the vehicle and sending navigational info, the customers can use other speech commands. For example, the customer can say, "OK Google, tell Mercedes Me to start my car," to remotely start the vehicle.
Head of Internet of Things and Wearable Integration at Mercedes-Benz, Nils Schanz said, "We are interested in these new assistants [because] they are based on artificial intelligence and they become better and better over time and they learn."
Another feature under consideration is the integration with the owner's electronic calendar. The customers can ask for reminders through voice commands. The reminder will pop-up on the infotainment system.
Schanz also said that eventually, customers would be able to give natural voice commands to Mercedes' virtual assistant. But there is no specific timeline or name for the digital assistant.
