Mercedes-AMG Project One Hypercar Details Revealed — Engine Will Rev To 11,000rpm
Mercedes-AMG has revealed more details about its upcoming flagship hypercar.
Mercedes-AMG has revealed a few details about its upcoming F1-derived hypercar codenamed 'Project One'.
The new Mercedes-AMG hypercar will be the halo car of Merc's performance division and will debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show as part of AMG's 50th Anniversary celebrations. The hybrid hypercar also marks the arrival of AMG's new electrified hybrid future.
The new hypercar will get the Formula One car's 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine that will rev up to 11,000rpm along with an electric motor at the crank. The engine will require some rework every 50,000 kilometres.
The road car will also retain the F1 engine's split turbochargers with the turbine and compressor mounted at separate ends of the longitudinally-mounted engine, with a common shaft running through the engine to connect them.
However, Mercedes revealed to Motoring that unlike the F1 car; the new hypercar will sport dual motors on the front axle that kick out 161bhp each. Powering all the electric motors will be a lightweight, high-density rapid-discharge lithium-ion battery which will allow for 24 kilometres of electric-only range.
The total power output will be more than 1,000bhp, and the new Merc will use an automated manual transmission instead of a heavy dual clutch gearbox to help keep the weight of the hypercar down.
The new Mercedes-AMG hypercar is expected to hit the streets in late 2018 or early 2019, just in time for the release of the Aston Martin Vulcan made in collaboration with Red Bull Racing.
The price for all the madness, $2.4 million (Rs15,97,32,000) which is still less than what a new Bugatti Chiron costs today.
