McLaren Appoints Robert Melville As Design Director
McLaren has appointed Robert Melville, the designer behind the Sport Series and the new 720s as its Design Director
British supercar marque McLaren has appointed Robert Melville, the designer who penned the 570S, 570 GT and the new 720S as its new Design Director.
Melville replaces Frank Stephenson who has left the supercar manufacturer after 10 years in charge of designing the supercars that came out of Woking.
Melville joined McLaren in 2009 as a Senior Designer, the same year McLaren revealed its first road car (MP4-12C) since the F1. He then worked as a part of the team that designed the 12C's replacement, the 650S, the 675LT and the P1 hybrid hypercar.
Melville led the design team that came up with the 570S and the 570 GT (the McLaren Sports Series) and the new 720S, which is the first of the second-generation supercars from McLaren's Super Series of cars.
Before joining McLaren, Melville worked at Jaguar Land Rover where his design sketches and clay model were chosen for the LRX Concept Vehicle which eventually made it to the road as the Evoque production car. After JLR, Melville joined General Motors as a Senior Designer at the company's UK Advanced Design Group.
Melville commented, "I am thrilled to be given the title of Design Director for McLaren Automotive. I remember when I got the call to come and join McLaren back in 2009 and the joy I felt then is the same today. We have developed a fantastic design team and have integrated a design philosophy that I feel passionately about. I have always believed that great design tells a great story and that is what we do here at McLaren. I'm incredibly proud."
