Maruti Suzuki Shifting To Advanced Safety Features On Cars; To Consolidate Platforms
Maruti Suzuki will concentrate on safer cars adapting to new crash-test regulations as well as looks to higher returns on investments because of the standardisation of parts.
Maruti Suzuki, India's largest car maker, is now shifting its focus to advanced safety features in its cars, consolidating the number of platforms that would comply with increasingly stringent crash test regulations in the world's fastest-expanding major economy.
As per ET Auto, at present, the Indo-Japanese major sells 16 vehicles on about eight different vehicle platforms. The company intends to consolidate and offer more models on three-four platforms harnessing Suzuki's Total Effective Control Technology (TECT).
The company looks to achieve safer cars adapting to new crash-test regulations as well as higher returns on investments because of the standardisation of parts.
Maruti Suzuki's executive director (engineering) C V Raman said, "We introduced Suzuki's fifth generation platform with the Baleno. It absorbs energy better, is lighter and more rigid, ensuring better ride and handling,"
He added, "We have multiple platforms for existing vehicles. We will be rationalising platforms over the next couple of years, giving better value to the customer by way of improved fuel efficiency and performance, while we enhance the safety features on our vehicles."
Maruti Suzuki and its parent company's R&D unit developed the new fifth generation car platform which is designed to provide advanced safety to occupants, without compromising on fuel efficiency, emission or performance.
Referred as TECT, the new platform is safer, stronger and 10 percent more rigid, while being 15 percent lighter.
In the last two years, Maruti Suzuki and its suppliers have spent about Rs.3,000 crore to introduce in three new models - Ignis, Baleno and Vitara Brezza - on the Fifth Generation A, B and C platforms that meet advanced safety norms.
While the Baleno and the Ignis are equipped to meet frontal, offset, side impact and pedestrian safety norms, the Vitara Brezza SUV is equipped to meet frontal, offset and side impact regulations. This comes ahead of the new safety regulations on new models from October 1, 2017, and for existing models from October 1, 2019.
On the whole, the company targets to make about 75-80 percent of cars in Maruti Suzuki's product lineup to be compliant with safety regulations about a year ahead of them becoming mandatory in the country.
