Maruti Suzuki Discontinues Sale Of Some Variants Of S-Cross — Find Out Why
Maruti Suzuki sells only the Alpha variant of the S-Cross powered by the 1.6-litre diesel motor.
Maruti Suzuki India sells two different motors for the S-Cross -- DDiS 320 and DDiS 200 -- while the DDiS 320 is powered by the 1.6-litre diesel engine, the DDiS 200 is powered by the 1.3-litre diesel unit.
Maruti Suzuki sells S-Cross through its premium NEXA dealerships and variants of the vehicles include base variant Sigma, mid-variants Delta and Zeta, and the top variant Alpha. The company has discontinued the all the lower variants of the DDiS 320 powered engine of the S-Cross.
The Alpha S-Cross DDiS 320 is the only variant available from the company. The S-Cross Alpha variant is priced at Rs 12.03 lakh ex-showroom (Delhi).
The 1.3-litre DDiS 200 though is available in all variants. These are priced in the range of Rs 8.78 lakh to Rs 10.63 lakh ex-showroom (Delhi).
The company attributed the decision to customer's preference for the higher trim of the 1.6-litre diesel engine variant. Therefore, from a business perspective, it is prudence to keep the number of variants at an optimum level as per customers requirements.
Maruti S-Cross was the first model to be sold through its premium NEXA outlets. The company initially offered both the 1.6-litre and the 1.3-litre diesel units; however, the pricing factor hampered the sales of the premium crossover SUV.
Maruti is selling close to 2,000 to 2,100 units of the S-Cross every month and along with the Vitara Brezza, have helped the company increase its market share in the Utility Vehicle (UV) segment.
The Brezza from Maruti Suzuki has been a success, while the S-Cross has been a slow starter for the company. The company feels that every brand has a specific role in the company's overall portfolio.
While the Vitara Brezza is a mass market brand, the S-Cross might not sell in big numbers, but contribute to the overall brand objectives of the company.
The company has grown in the UV segment and in period of April to December 2016, it grew over 120 percent. Now, Maruti Suzuki India commands over 65 percent market share in the UV segment alone.
