Maruti Alto Is The Best-Selling Car In India For 13 Consecutive Years
Maruti Suzuki Alto has played a significant role in mobilising a majority of Indian population replacing Maruti 800 as the best-selling car in India.
Maruti Suzuki India's entry level hatchback continues to rule India car market for the 13th consecutive year. The humble Maruti Alto has sold more than 3 million units since its launch, reflecting its testimony of its popularity among the buyers in the country.
In 2016-17, Maruti Suzuki recorded sales of over 2.41 lakh units of the Alto hatchback. Of the total 1,443,641 units sold, Maruti Alto contributing about 17 percent of its domestic sales. The brand Alto sells more than total sales in a year by several other car manufacturers individually in the country.
Maruti Alto clocks close to 22,000 units on an average every month. At the entry level segment, buyers have valued the Alto as a value for money proposition for a long time with its balanced performance and high fuel efficiency.
Despite fierce competition, the Alto continues to stay on top of the best-selling cars' list.
Maruti Suzuki launched the Alto in the Indian market back in September 2000. In its 17 years of presence, Maruti Suzuki has made many upgradations to the car to keep it at pace with the market demand.
"Alto is the No1 best-selling brand for 13 consecutive years. This unique distinction is a reflection of Alto's popularity. I am delighted that Alto once again dominates the car industry in 2016-17," said RS Kalsi, Executive Director (M&S) at Maruti Suzuki.
In February 2016, Maruti Alto reached the 3rd millionth milestone. Apart from the Indian market, the Maruti Alto is famous in several other overseas markets as well, including the Sri Lanka, Chile, Philippines and Uruguay. In the last fiscal, Maruti Suzuki exported more than 21,000 units to these countries.
Currently, the Maruti Alto is available with a two engine options - 800cc and 1.0-litre K10 - and a CNG fuel variant. The powerplant is offered with the choices of either the 5-speed manual gearbox to the clutch-less Auto Gear Shift gearbox (AGS) technology.
