Mahindra Compact SUV Confirmed; Will Rival Brezza & EcoSport
The Mahindra S201 SUV will be positioned between the Scorpio and XUV500.
Mahindra has confirmed that the two new Utility Vehicle (UV) that will be launched in India in 2017-18 are the U321 MPV and the S201.
As per Overdrive, the Indian UV manufacturer has already said that the U321 will be built at the Nasik plant. Now it is learnt that Mahindra is working on a Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza rival with the S201. And it will be positioned between the Scorpio and the XUV500.
The S201 compact SUV will share the same platform as the SsangYong Tivoli. Mahindra has also said that the new SUV will not be a rebadged Tivoli, and it will look considerably different.
The development of S201 SUV will take place at the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai. This centre has played a pivotal role in the new versions of the Mahindra XUV500, Scorpio, TUV300, KUV100 as well as the Imperio.
The upcoming S201 compact SUV will be available in both petrol and diesel engines. The SUV will make use of a new-gen 1.5-litre and 1.6-litre petrol motors that are being jointly developed by Mahindra and SsangYong.
Mahindra has the advantage of using the assistance of design houses like Pininfarina, SsangYong and its design house in Chennai. The S201 will be a blend of insights from Pininfarina and the company's facility. It will come with an entirely fresh cabin design with premium appeal.
Also, the new compact SUV from Mahindra, the S201, will feature Andriod Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity options along with other features.
Mahindra is also working on bringing features such as wireless mobile charging, cross traffic alert, occupant detection, pre-collision braking and multi-colour ambience lighting. Also, features like the adaptive cruise control with lane assist.
However, how much of that will be offered in the S201 needs to be seen. With the expected safety norms, ABS and dual-airbags might be offered as standard.
The Mahindra S201 SUV will compete with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Ford EcoSport.
