Mahindra's Unsold BS-III Stock Numbers Revealed — What Will Happen To These Vehicles Now?

Mahindra and Mahindra is left with 18,000 unsold BS-III vehicle stock. From April 1, 2017, the government has banned the sales of BS-III vehicles in India.

The Government of India has implemented the new BS-IV emission norms from April 1, 2017. And automakers across the country are left with unsold BS-III vehicles.

Like several other automakers in India, Mahindra and Mahindra is also left with a stock of 18,000 units of unsold BS-III vehicles. The company managed to sell half of the stock by offering hefty discounts.

With the implementation of new emission norms, Mahindra plans to export BS-III vehicles and convert some vehicles to BS-IV. But converting from BS-III to BS-IV might attract an added expense of Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 on a small commercial vehicle.

In the month of March 2017, Mahindra sold 56,031 units against the 52,718 units in March 2016. The 6 percent growth is a result of discounts up to 15 percent on BS-III vehicles.

The domestic sales for Mahindra and Mahindra stood at 53,322 units in March 2017 as compared to the 48,967 units in the month of March 2016. The domestic sales recorded a growth of 9 percent.

It's not only Mahindra, but other companies are also left with unsold BS-III vehicles. It is still unclear that why manufacturers continued producing BS-III vehicles despite being notified by the government well in advance about the ban.
