Karun Chandhok Makes His Return To Le Mans 24 Hours
Indian driver Karun Chandhok is making his return to the iconic Le Mans 24 Hours this year. He will also compete in the Spa World Endurance Championship round.
Ex-Formula One driver Karun Chandhok makes his return to the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2017. The Indian driver has sealed a deal with the British Tockwith Ligier team.
Chandhok has raced at the Le Mans from 2012-15 with the JRM and Murphy racing teams. This year he will drive the Tockwith Motorsports LMP2 class Ligier-Gibson P217 in the 24-hour race in June. Ahead of that, he will compete in the Spa World Endurance Championship round.
Chandhok will be accompanied by his teammates Nigel Moore and Phil Hanson, who are driving for Tockwith Ligier in the European Le Mans Series.
Speaking to Autosport Chandhok said, "It will be nice to go back to Le Mans because it is the best race in the world. Simon [Moore, the team owner] phoned me and said that they were looking for an experienced driver to come and help out."
He added, "I was clear that if I was to do Le Mans, I needed to do a race before, and they suggested that instead of me joining them for an ELMS round we should do the Spa WEC round."
Yorkshire-based Tockwith Motorsports gets its first Le Mans entry by winning the LMP3 class of last year's Asian Le Mans Series. Chandhok will get to drive the Ligier-Gibson P217 before the first free practise at Spa on May 4, 2017.
