Karnataka Government Temporarily Bans Cab Sharing Services
Karnataka State Transport Department has temporarily banned the cab sharing services such as UberPool and OlaShare.
The Government of Karnataka has temporarily banned the cab sharing services such as UberPool and OlaShare, stating that such services violate the existing permit and transport laws.
The Karnataka State Transport Department has also mentioned that the cab sharing services will be resumed once the Union and State government make appropriate amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act.
According to the current Motor Vehicle Act, cabs are not allowed to not allowed to offers services with multiple pick-up and drop-off points.
The cab sharing services violate the law by picking up passengers from different points and dropping them at different destinations during a single trip. Although it is legal to pick up and drop more than one passenger between two fixed points.
With the limitations of the current Motor Vehicles Act, cab aggregators such as Ola and Uber have requested for a window of three days to change their software to stop offering such services.
On the request made by the cab aggregators, the transport department has given a deadline till February 3, 2017, to stop offering cab sharing services.
