Honda To Export Diesel Engines From India For The First Time
In a first, Honda Cars India will export the 1.6-litre diesel engines from India to Thailand.
Honda Cars India, the Indian arm of Japanese carmaker, will for the first time export fully assembled 1.6-litre diesel engines from its Tapukara plant in Rajasthan.
In a first, Honda will be producing the 1.6-litre diesel engines in India as currently, it does not have any product that is powered by this mill in the domestic market. The company will begin exports from July 2017 onwards.
Thailand will be the first market to receive the India made 1.6-litre diesel engines, where Honda has a large production set up for designing, developing and manufacturing vehicle platforms.
Like India, Thailand is also a large automotive market and hence the requirement for a larger displacement diesel unit.
The Thailand-bound 1.6-litre diesel engine will then be exported to other Honda factories such as the Philippines for use in the carmaker's global models.
Honda officials, in a recent interaction, pointed out that India's Tapukara plant was the largest manufacturing facility for the manual gearbox and diesel engines for Honda. The facility is also the largest exporter for manual gearbox globally.
Currently, the Tapukara plant has a capacity to produce 1.8 lakh engines per annum and manufactures the 1.2-lite and 1.5-litre petrol as well as the 1.5-litre diesel unit that powers its City, Amaze and Jazz models among others.
Since 2013 when Honda set up the diesel powertrain division at the Tapukara facility, the Honda Cars India has been exporting critical engine parts of the 1.6-litre diesel unit to Honda UK to power the Civic and the CR-V.
Other important international markets include North America, South America, Japan and South East Asia.
DriveSpark Thinks!
India has been a strategic location for manufacturing engines and parts due to its cost effectiveness. With Honda Cars India exporting the 1.6-litre diesel engines, the country could be the hub for diesel powertrains for global markets.
