General Motors Hints At Ending Its India Operations — The End Of An Era?
General Motors India has hinted that it will put an end to its india operations by halting the production of right-hand drive vehicles.
Indian wing of the US auto major, General Motors India might put an end to its India operations from next month. The company may run the India plant only to export the vehicles to foreign markets.
As per sources, General Motors India may officially announce the end of its domestic sales in May. This decision from the company hints that the automaker may be thinking of putting an end to its India operations.
By the end of April 2017, General Motors will halt the production at its Halol plant. The car maker had already stopped the production of Cruze sedan last week. The production of Tavera will come to an end by April 28, 2017.
General Motors' Talegaon plant has stopped producing right-hand drive vehicles, which is suitable for sale in India. The only product being manufactured is the left-hand drive Beat, which is meant for export to Mexico.
A spokesperson from General Motors India said, "Few weeks back, we advised our employees, stakeholders and media that General Motors will cease production of all vehicles at the Halol plant on April 28."
He added, "General Motors continues to believe in the growth potential of the Indian market and we will continue to closely monitor the market and evolve our product strategy accordingly."
According to sources, General Motors India is expected to take a soft approach to end its India operations. Due to its dealer network and current consumer base in the country. Officially, the company says it is reviewing its India plans. But the production of most models have been stopped.
