The workers stated that they did not have any interaction with officials of General Motors as the plant was shut down. The company has decided to shift its manufacturing operations to its Talegaon plant in Maharashtra.
The contract workers at Halol facility were severed as the contract was not renewed in 2016. The permanent workers were offered voluntary retirement scheme (VRS). But most of the workers refused the offer as it was not beneficial.
The workers were also against the shifting to Talegaon plant. But as per sources, slowly workers are softening towards the decision of transferring. But the workers claimed that they are approaching state labour department.
But the state government told Gujarat High Court that after the legal examination of the dispute at Halol it would take action in four weeks. But the workers are continuing to protest as their future remains uncertain.
GM India President and Managing Director, Kaher Kazem stated that the company is fully aware of the impact on its employees at Halol. He also said that the company is committed to supporting the workers.
