Chinese Automaker Might Have To Change Its Name — Is Trump To Be Blamed?
China's largest automaker, Guangzhou Automobile Group's flagship car brand is called Trumpchi and never guessed that Trump would win.
We know that the U.S. President Trump has been vocal about American automakers manufacturing outside of the U.S. and not in their own country. However, he might have ruffled feathers of a Chinese automaker as well.
China's largest automaker, Guangzhou Automobile Group's flagship car brand is called Trumpchi and never guessed that Trump would win. The company is now researching to find out if it should use the Trumpchi name in the U.S.
GAC Group President Feng Xingya told Reuters that "This is a complete coincidence, we didn't even have the slightest idea he would be president."
It might not sound like a big hassle for GAC having a car with the president's name. In fact, it could help it sell cars in the U.S.
Xingya said that "At first I'd never thought of it, why change the name? It's the president Americans selected; it's similar to the president's name, this has to be good right? But in the United States, the level of opposition [to Trump] is high."
The company says the decision is still under consideration and that the GAC is preparing to enter the U.S by 2019.
As of now, Chinese automakers have not been successful at entering the U.S market; however, GAC hopes to be the first to create a mark for itself.
