CES 2017: BMW Showcases The New-Gen 5-Series With Self-Driving Technology
BMW has showcased the new generation 5-Series car equipped with self driving technology at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show.
The Consumer Electronics Show 2017 (CES 2017) is the biggest tech gatherings in the world. With cars getting more technologically advanced, many car manufacturers are also participating in the show.
The seventh-generation BMW 5-Series was unveiled in October 2015. However, the model showcased in the CES 2017 is a fully self-driving prototype which will hit the roads by 2021.
The self-driving BMW 5-Series looks like a production ready version and the new 5-Series will feature semi-autonomous technology.
The self-driving car is equipped with a host of sensors and onboard computers to control the vehicle. The car uses a digital map to check the vehicle's position and surroundings. This will result in accurate lane keeping.
The self-driving car also comes with access to apps such as Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Prime Now. With the onboard computer taking the control of the car, the driver can watch videos or listen to music.
All these information is controlled by an Open Mobility Cloud service, which serves as the intelligent data management system. It also enables the driver and passengers to utilise the added in-car entertainment system.
Apart from that the BMW 5-Series self-driving car also comes with gesture controls which are found on the new-generation BMW 7-Series, the car will also include the virtual personal assistant from Microsoft, the Cortana.
The best part of the self-driving prototype is the Robot Valet Parking service. All you need to do is just exit the vehicle and send it on its way to the parking spot. You can also call the vehicle via an app and the car will drive itself to your pickup point.
