Burt Munro's Land Speed Record Lives On — Indian Motorcycle To Recreate History
Burt Munro’s nephew, Lee Munro is set to honour his uncle’s original record attempt ride in Bonneville to celebrate 50 years.
Fifty years ago, Burt Munro set the fastest land speed record on a heavily modified 1920 Indian Scout Streamliner. The record stands till date for an under 1000cc motorcycle.
Now, Burt Munro's nephew, Lee Munro and Indian Motorcycle will celebrate the land speed record achieved, which stands at 184.087mph (296.259km/h).
On August 13, Lee Munro will ride a modified Indian Scout built by Indian Motorcycle on Bonneville to celebrate his uncle's achievement. The engineers from Indian Motorcycle volunteered for this project and prepared the motorcycle fro Lee Munro on their free time.
Lee Munro said that this ride would not be to out-do his uncle but to honour his original ride. He said, "My uncle Burt was a significant inspiration for my racing career, and his appetite for speed is clearly a part of my DNA."
Lee Munro was born and raised in Invercargill, New Zealand, the same town as his uncle. He started downhill mountain bike racing and has had success with motorcycle road racing in New Zealand too.
Burt Munro's famous record attempt has been made into a movie too, called the ‘The World's Fastest Indian', starring Anthony Hopkins in the lead role.
