A report published by Autocar has suggested that BMW would showcase the much-awaited X7 in concept form at the Frankfurt Motor Show scheduled for September this year. The BMW X7 has been under development 2015 and has been spotted testing a couple of times.

The X7 is the largest SUV to be produced by BMW so far, and is intended to compete with its German rivals, the Mercedes-Benz GLS, and the upcoming Audi Q8, international rival Land Rover Range Rover, and US market rivals - Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator.

BMW to reveal the X7 at the Frankfurt Motor Show

A few reports have previously suggested that the X7 will be produced in two guises - a standard, three-row, seven-seater luxury SUV and a four-seater, ultra-luxury SUV with a royal touch. It is safe to assume that the former would be directly targeted at its traditional rivals and the latter would be targeted at the likes of the Bentley Bentayga and the upcoming Roll-Royce Cullinan.

Ian Robertson, BMW's head of sales and marketing was quoted by Autocar as saying, "We will have some versions that are top-end luxury, as well as more mainstream versions. I can't talk about pricing now, but given that this car will have all the technology and luxury of the 7 Series, it gives you a pretty good idea of the price point we're talking about."

Robertson went on to say, "If you put both cars next to each other, the resemblance is small in terms of wheelbase, etc. We're not going to just extend the wheelbase, it's a complete new panel cell." By saying so, he busted the rumours that the X7 would just be a stretched out X5.

Details about the powertrain options are unavailable right now, but Robertson suggested that the engine of the new X7 will combine elements from a wide range of BMW models, instead of just the big SUVs like the X5 and X6. He also dropped hints about having some hybrid models as well. So a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder diesel engine and a 4.4-litre, V8 petrol can be expected to power the upcoming SUV.

The BMW X7 would be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, alongside the new i3S, 6-series GT and the next-gen X3.

Drivespark Thinks!

The BMW X7, by the looks of it is very well capable of putting up a tough fight against its competitors from germany as well as from across the world. The success of the SUV now depends on the price at which BMW sells it.
