BMW 6 Series GT Revealed Ahead Of Official Debut

BMW is adding a hatchback version of the 5 Series sedan to the product lineup, refers to it as the 6 Series GT.

Not many might be interested in a 5-door hatchback BMWs, but for those who love "the long-distance comfort of a luxury sedan with alluring coupe style", BMW is offering you the 6 Series GT.

The BMW 6 Series GT replaces the old 5 Series GT with a trimmed exterior, a spacious cabin and greater boot space.

The replacement is line with the German luxury carmaker's efforts to put more importance on luxury at the upper end of its portfolio. Reports suggest that the current 6 Series coupé, cabriolet and Gran Coupé will be phased out within the next couple of years. The 6 Series coupe and cabriolet will be replaced by the 8 Series coupé and cabriolet due in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

The BMW 6 Series GT is based mainly on the latest 5 and 7 Series. The car is built on BMW's latest CLAR (Cluster Architecture platform), which helps to provide it with weight savings of up to 150kg by upping the aluminium and high-strength steel content in the body and chassis.

BMW offers the 6 Series GT with rear air springs and automatic self-levelling as standard suspension. However, just like the 5 and 7 Series, buyers can opt for more advanced air suspension featuring air springs at the front and rear, together with variable damping control and active roll control.

At the top of the model range, BMW is offering a combination of optional four-wheel drive and active rear steering.

The dimension of the BMW 6 Series GT measures at 3070mm for the wheelbase as the 5 Series GT with the same width. However, the 6 Series GT is 21mm lower and 87mm longer. The boot is 110 litres bigger compared to the 5 Series GT.

One the exterior, the BMW 6 Series GT comes with substantial improvements such as the upgraded active aerodynamics in the front grille, behind the front wheels, and at the rear of the car.

Inside, the BMW 6 Series GT is equipped a 10.25-inch high definition display running the latest iteration of BMW's iDrive infotainment system along with a 16 speaker, 1,400 watt Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system. Additionally, the car is available with a high definition head-up display and BMW's gesture control technology.

Powertrain choices include a 2.0-litre four-cylinder 630i, a 3.0-litre inline-six 640i, and a 3.0-litre diesel 630d, while the xDrive is offered on the 3.0-litre equipped models.

While auto enthusiasts might not be a fan of a 5-door BMW, the 6 Series GT which sits on the 5 Series model with slightly increased space and bigger boot, long distance travel does get comfortable than the 5 Series GT.
