Aston Martin Confirms Its First All-Electric RapidE Production
Aston Martin's first all-electric car will be based on the Rapide AME and produced as a limited-run.
Aston Martin has confirmed that its first all-electric model, the RapidE, will enter production in 2019, but will be limited to just 155 models.
The British automaker first revealed its all-electric model less than two years ago as a concept, and the production model will be based on the Aston Martin Rapide AMR.
Williams Advanced Engineering has been confirmed to be the lead engineering partner on the RapidE. They have worked on the original RapidE Concept and will assist Aston Martin with the task of engineering integration.
The RapidE will continue to offer the same dynamics of the Rapide S, with an all-electric powertrain replacing the six-litre V12 engine.
Aston Martin will reveal details about the RapidE's electric powertrain at a later date. Company CEO Andy Palmer says the model, will initiate Aston's low- and zero-emission vehicle strategy - though he stressed that conventionally powered cars would remain core to the brand.
"Having unveiled the RapidE Concept back in October 2015 we reach another milestone with the confirmation that we are not putting the first all-electric Aston Martin into production," said Palmer.
He added, "RapidE represents a sustainable future in which Aston Martin's values of seductive style and supreme performance don't merely co-exist alongside a new zero-emission powertrain, but are enhanced by it."
He further said, "The internal combustion engine has been at the heart of Aston Martin for more than a century, and will continue to be for years to come. RapidE will showcase Aston Martin's vision, desire and capability to successfully embrace radical change, delivering a new breed of car that stays true to our ethos and delights our customers."
DriveSpark Thinks!
Even as autonomous and electric cars gain momentum in the automobile industry, Aston Martin's foray into the electric space creates another option for luxury car buyers. With the Aston Martin confirming the RapidE to deliver the same driving dynamics as the Rapid S, we can hopethat the electric version will not disappoint.
