Volkswagen Ready To Bring The World's Most Famous Hot Hatchback To India
The world's best know hot hatcback is set to enter India as the nation's hot hatch market heats up.
Volkswagen's Golf GTI, the original hot hatchback looks set to enter India as the German carmaker looks to take advantage of the nation's maturing hot hatch market.
Speaking to Autocar, Michael Mayer, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India stated that his company was keen to bring the Golf GTI to India by either 2018 or 2019.
However, Mayer also stated that before the Golf GTI does come over to India, Volkswagen would concentrate its efforts on SUVs. VWs SUV assault in India will be lead by the new Tiguan which is expected to launch in the early part of 2017 at a price of around Rs 30 lakh.
The Volkswagen Golf is the carmaker's mainstay in multiple international markets and is based on Volkswagen's MQB platform. However, the price segment the Golf occupies isn't a viable one for hatchbacks in India and with the Polo is already one of the most expensive hatches on sale in the Indian market.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI recently underwent a mid-life facelift along with the rest of the Golf lineup and the refreshed and powered up model was revealed to the world in November.
Powering the regular version of the facelifted VW Golf GTi is a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that produces 227bhp while the performance variant sees that power figure go up to 241bhp. The engine is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox.
The interiors of the new Golf GTI feature a pure digital instrument cluster along with a brand new 9.2-inch touchscreen. The dual display setup is similar to the Virtual cockpit setup found on Audi cars today.
The new Golf GTI will be available in India as a limited edition model similar to the recently launched Polo GTI (only 99 units made it to India) and is expected to carry a hefty price tag as well.
