Toyota To Come Up With Performance Sub-Brand To Rival BMW M Sport And Mercedes-AMG
Toyota and Gazoo, the Japanese carmaker’s motorsport division are looking to make a global presence and compete with BMW M and Mercedes-AMG.
Performance tuned road cars are making a striking presence around the world, thanks to two brands — BMW M Sport and Mercedes-AMG. Now, Toyota is looking to soon join the limelight.
Toyota's racing division, ‘Gazoo' is looking to make a presence into the performance road car segment to rival the two German brands, BMW M Sport and Mercedes-AMG.
Gazoo, in addition to coordinating international motorsport activities for Toyota like the World Endurance Championship and World Rally Championship, Gazoo works on cars that are sold in the Japanese market.
Gazoo sells limited edition cars in the Japanese market under two names: Gazoo Racing Masters of Nürburgring (GRMN) and G's.
Koei Saga, the Head of Gazoo and Toyota's powertrain division said it is his intention to increase Gazoo's presence in road car markets globally and promote the link between its racing and road car activities.
He said: "In Europe, the challenge is bigger because we have more competitors here, and it is also an issue of cost. However, I am very much working on that so we can have a brand like the M brand."
The most recent Gazoo-tuned car was the GT86 GRMN. The car had changes such as increased power and torque outputs, reworked suspension and aerodynamics, and weight reduction. Only 100 cars were made, which sold out quickly.
This also raises a question — will Gazoo be involved with the upcoming BMW-Toyota partnered Supra? We will have to wait and see.
