India is fast becoming one of the largest car markets globally. Some of the car made and conceptualised in India are being exported to other countries.
Here is the list of the top selling cars in India for the month of May 2016. There are some misses and hits as well. Read on to find out which car sold the most in May 2016.
10. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is the surprising vehicle which has managed to enter the top 10 from the month of April and continues the upward trend, selling 5,188 units when compared to 5,012 units in April 2016.
What is surprising of the Ciaz is that, it has been preferred choice compared to the long-standing sedan segment leader, the Honda City, in fact, the Honda City for the first time does not figure in the top 10 list.
Maruti has equipped the Ciaz with a mild hybrid which has helped the performance of the car in terms of fuel efficiency. In the Delhi especially, with the exclusion of hybrid cars from the odd-even rule, the Ciaz has definitely scored over its nearest rival, the Honda City.
9. Renault Kwid
Renault has broken the bastion of the Maruti's dominance in the small car segment in India, with the Kwid, Renault has got a winner on its hands and in time could threaten the position of the Maruti Suzuki Alto.
Renault sold 5,600 units in May 2016 and has debuted in the Top 10 list of best-selling cars in India. The USP of the Renault Kwid is that it is feature ridden with the likes of touch-screen infotainment system, remote keyless entry and most of all, the SUVish looking design which has captured the imagination of many in India.
8. Maruti Suzuki Celerio
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio might not be a good looking car, however, its performance and efficiency and most of all the affordability of an automatic car have helped sell better.
Maruti sold 7,379 units compared to 6,653 units in April 2016, an 11 percent increase, it clearly shows people's preference for a tried and tested brand of Maruti cars. Maruti has read the pulse of the people in India and launched the AMT car and has reaped benefits.
7. Hyundai Elite i20
Hyundai's Elite i20 one of the best premium hatchbacks from its stable is a sought after car in India and it was one the first to break into this segment with the best performance to offer.
However, it has been facing heat from Maruti Suzuki Baleno and slipped position from 5 to 7, it sold 8,600 units compared to 10,334, down 17 percent. Suzuki Baleno being better in terms of pricing and features, the Elite i20 has been pushed down. Hyundai is planning an automatic Elite i20 model which could put the bang back on it.
6. Maruti Suzuki Baleno
The premium hatchback from Maruti Suzuki, the Baleno has taken the market by storm and sold 10,004 units and entered the top 10 list this month. Maruti has equipped the Baleno with very features like standard airbags and ABS across variants, this has been coupled with the competitive pricing.
Surely, Maruti understands the customer's pulse and positioned it correctly and they way it's performing, it might break into the top 5 selling cars in India.
5. Hyundai Grand i10
The hatchback from Hyundai has climbed one position from sixth to fifth and sold 12,055 units compared to 10,112 units in April 2016, a good increase of 19 percent.
The Grand i10 from Hyundai is a preferred family hatchback car in India and it is well balanced in terms of styling and features, not to forget the quality of the product from Hyundai.
4. Maruti Suzuki Swift
The best performing car from Maruti Suzuki, Swift has been one of the best selling cars in India for a long time. However, it slipped position from second to fourth. It sold 12,355 units in May, in April, it sold 17,195 units.
This could be attributed to cannibalisation of its cousin the Baleno, there is not much difference in terms of pricing between the Baleno and Swift, however, the Baleno provides better features in terms safety and premium add-ons. Maruti will address the slump in sales with a facelifted Swift early next year.
3. Maruti Suzuki WagonR
The WagonR is an evergreen car from Maruti and it will take time before someone breaks into the bastion of the WagonR. It is one of the most preferred cars for families at a budget pricing and value for money proposition.
Maruti sold 13,231 units compared to 12,467 units in April 2016, an increase of 6 percent and jumped from the fourth position to the third position.
2. Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire
Many have come and tried to grab a share of the compact sedan market which is led by Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire and have not been very successful. The Swift DZire is strong in its overall package and will continue to dominate the market for some time till we have a strong product to rival the DZire.
Maruti sold 16,968 units when compared to 16,473 units in April 2016 and climbed from third to the second spot.
1. Maruti Suzuki Alto
Market leader in terms of sales has been the Maruti Suzuki Alto which sold a massive 19,874 units in May 2016 and cementing its leadership on the top 10 selling cars in India. However, there has been a decline of 12 percent, it sold 22,595 in April 2016.
This decline can be attributed to the Renault Kwid which has emerged as a competent rival to the Alto. Datsun has launched the redi-GO which will be competing in this space. Maruti will have to go back to the drawing board for the entry-level car segment, however, knowing Maruti, they might spring a surprise on its rivals.
Maruti has a total of seven cars of the total ten cars in the top ten selling cars in India, this is 70 percent, indeed, they are turning on the heat on its rivals.
