With the government announcing demonetization of high-value currencies in the month of November, it has been a quite tough month for the Indian automobile industry. However, on the sales of passenger vehicles including both cars and SUVs, the impact was not severe as expected.
The demonetization drive has impacted the sales of vehicles across segments, especially of commercial vehicles, two-wheelers and large SUVs. The sales numbers for November does not reflect this as it is inclusive of the sales from Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to dealers. The negative impact on the sales will reflect in the coming months. Here are the top 10 selling passenger vehicles for the month of November 2016:
10. Renault Kwid
The small hatchback from Renault seems to have slowed down in terms of sales registering 7,847 units of sale. The Kwid has been slipping position in the last couple of months, Renault was able to sell 9,801 units in October 2016 and has moved down the order from 9th to 10th position in November.
Renault though witnessed a 43 percent increase in sales when compared to the same period last year. It seems the Kwid is losing steam in the Indian market; however, there is enough demand for the small hatchback from Renault.
9. Hyundai Elite i20
This is another car on the list which has slipped position in the top 10 selling cars by selling 8,917 units in November 2016. In October 2016, Hyundai sold 11,532 units and 10,074 units in November 2015.
The fall in sales could be attributed to the Maruti Suzuki Baleno sales in the market. Buyers have chosen to opt for the Baleno from Maruti rather than Hyundai's Elite i20. Hyundai Motor India sales have suffered in the negative zone.
8. Maruti Suzuki Celerio
Maruti Suzuki Celerio has been a consistent performer for the company even bettering its sales compared to the previous year. Maruti sold 9,543 units in November 2016, while it sold 6,956 units in November 2015, registering an increase of 37 percent.
In the top 10 selling cars and SUVs for the November 2016, the Celerio has been the best performer when compared to the previous period.
7. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza
The sub-compact SUV from Maruti has been a runaway hit in the country and the company sold 9,719 units in November 2016. Maruti sold 9,375 units in October 2016 and has increased its sales nearly by 500 units.
Maruti seems to have not been affected by the demonisation effect as it enjoys the branding in India for its affordable and after sales service experience.
6. Hyundai Grand i10
Hyundai's only other model to be in the top 10 selling cars for November 2016 is the Grand i10. However, when compared to the previous period, the Grand i10 registered a decline sales by 14 percent and was ranked at 4th position.
Hyundai sold 12,899 units of the Grand i10 in November 2015 and this year it was able to sell 11,059 units. This is not much when we look at the number of sales, but it has been declining in the top 10 list.
5. Maruti Suzuki Baleno
The star of the top 10 selling cars and SUVs in November 2016 is the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and has broken into the top 5 selling cars in India. Maruti sold 11,093 units of the Baleno in November 2016 compared to 9,074 units in November 2015.
The largest carmaker in India has registered an increase in sales of the Baleno by 22 percent and has been dominating the current trend in the market.
4. Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire
The only model from Maruti Suzuki which has witnessed a decline in sales is the sub-compact sedan DZire. Maruti sold 14,201 units in November 2016 while it sold 15,463 units in November 2015.
Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch the new 2017 Swift DZire next year and hopes that the decline of 8 percent is corrected as it is still the best sub-compact sedan in terms of sales.
3. Maruti Suzuki Swift
The hatchback from Maruti has gained momentum in November 2016, Maruti Suzuki was able to sell 14,594 units of the Swift. The Swift held the 4th position in October 2016 and has moved up the ladder this month.
Maruti Suzuki sold 11,859 units of the Swift in November 2015 and when compared to November 2016, there is a significant increase of 22 percent.
2. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R
The evergreen car from Maruti Suzuki, the Wagon R is impressive with sales of 15,566 units in November 2016. When compared to sales of 13,986 units in same period last year, Maruti has registered an increase of 11 percent in sales.
The Wagon R has dislodged the DZire from the second spot when compared to October 2016. The tall boy designed Wagon R has not been affected much by the demonetization.
1. Maruti Suzuki Alto
Maruti sold 23,320 units in November 2016 and compared to the previous period where the company sold 21,995 units. This is an increase of 6 percent for the largest carmaker in the small hatchback segment.
It will take a mammoth effort to dislodge the best selling car in India, the Alto has been the bread and butter model and by the recent trend, there aren't any model to challenge the Alto.
