Making Every Drop Count — India's Top 10 Fuel Efficient Cars
If you've ever gone hunting for a brand new car, the first question after the price of the vehicle is usually 'What's the Mileage?'
This ingrained mentality of asking about the mileage of any vehicle no matter what brand, make or model, is something that all of us as Indians do on an almost everyday basis.
This frugality sometimes makes us compromise on what car we bring home, just because the one we originally wanted to buy wasn't fuel efficient enough.
So let's take a look at the most frugal fuel sipping cars in the country.
10. Chevrolet Beat
The quirky looking Chevrolet Beat is powered by a 936cc, 3-cylinder engine that produces 58bhp and 150Nm of torque.
The Beat diesel returns a mileage of 25.44km/l according to official figures from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI).
Prices for the diesel powered Beat start at Rs. 5.05 lakhs, ex-showroom (Delhi).
09. Honda Amaze
Honda's 1.5-litre diesel engine does duty on a number of cars and when put under the hood of the Amaze sedan it kicks out 98bhp and 200Nm of torque.
The SOHC 4-cylinder diesel is a very fuel efficient engine and returns a mileage of 25.8km/l (ARAI).
Prices for the Amaze diesel start at Rs. 6.42 lakhs, ex-showroom (Delhi).
08. Ford Figo (Tie)
The Ford Figo is Ford's answer to the Maruti Suzuki Swift and it utilizes a 1.5-litre engine to produce 99bhp and 215Nm of torque.
The Figo hatchback returns an ARAI certified mileage of 25.83km/l and is priced at Rs. 6.26 lakhs, ex-showroom (Delhi).
08. Ford Figo Aspire (Tie)
The Figo Aspire is the sub 4-metre sedan version of the Figo hatchback and utilises the same 1.5-litre engine. Power and torque figures are the same at 99bhp and 215Nm.
Despite the increase in weight thanks to addition of the boot, the Ford Figo Aspire returns a mileage of 25.83km/l(ARAI).
Prices for the Aspire diesel start at Rs. 6.31 lakhs ex-showroom (Delhi).
07. Honda City
Honda's 1.5-litre diesel engine returns under the hood of the City sedan. The 4-cylinder diesel engine produces 98bhp and 200Nm of torque.
Despite producing quite a good amount of power and torque, Honda's i-DTEC sips fuel at the rate of just 26km/l which ensures that it slips ahead of the Ford Figo siblings into seventh place.
The base Honda City diesel is priced at Rs. 9.22 lakhs, ex-showroom (Delhi).
06. Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire
The Swift Dzire from Maruti Suzuki is powered by a 1.3-litre diesel engine sourced from Fiat. The 4-cylinder engine produces 74bhp and 190Nm of torque.
The reason why the Dzire sedan has become a favourite of the taxi industry is quite simple, the car returns a mileage of 26.59km/l.

05. Tata Tiago
The Lionel Messi endorsed Tiago from Tata Motors is aimed at the younger crowd with its youthful design.

However, the tiny size of the powerplant means that it sips fuel like a toddler using a straw. The Celerio diesel returns a mileage of 27.62km/l.
Prices for the diesel powered Celerio start at Rs. 4.72 lakhs, ex-showroom (Delhi).
01. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz

The base Ciaz diesel is available at a price of Rs. 8.22 lakhs, ex-showroom (Delhi).
