Tata Motors Could Downsize Diesel Engines For Delhi Market
The ban on the sale of diesel engines over 2,000cc continues in the Delhi region. Several manufacturer's overall sales have been affected owing to the ban. Tata Motors has a strong portfolio of diesel vehicles and most of its SUVs are powered by diesel engines over 2,000cc.
There is a high possibility of Tata Motors downsizing its diesel engines specially for Delhi. Currently, Tata Safari and Aria models come powered with 2.2-litre diesel engine options. The Sumo model is offered with a 3.0-litre diesel engine with optional BS-III and BS-IV emission compliance.
Previously, the ban on the sale of diesel engines over 2,000cc by the Delhi Government was supposed to end by March 31, 2016. Officials have decided to extend the ban in an attempt to keep pollution levels in check.
So far a timeline has not been revealed by Tata Motors as to when the downsized engines could be introduced. There is no information on displacement and performance figures as well of the downsized diesel engines. High-selling Tata models could receive the new downsized diesel engine primarily.
Mahindra & Mahindra took a similar route to continue selling diesel vehicles in Delhi. They provided the XUV5OO and Scorpio models with 1.99-litre diesel engines specially developed for Delhi market. Surprisingly the downsized engine produces similar performance figures like the larger displacement diesel engine.
