Supreme Court Extends Ban On Large Diesel Cars
The Supreme Court has extended the ban on the registration of new diesel vehicles with engines over 2,000cc in the Delhi NCR region.
The Supreme Court's ban has been in place since December and will continue until further notice from the country's highest court.
The Supreme Court however has stated that it was willing to modify its stance on the registration of larger capacity diesel vehicles if an additional environment cess based on the vehicle's price and engine size. The court also suggested imposing the same cess on smaller diesel engines as well.
The ban has affected a lot of carmakers including Tata which can't sell any of its SUV's in the NCR region and Toyota which loses out on sales of its newly launched Innova Crysta.
Other carmakers losing out include luxury carmakers like Mercedes-Benz which currently cannot sell any of its diesel powered vehicles in the the very lucrative NCR region.
