Surprising Turn Of Events At Formula E Season 3 Opener At Hong Kong
Formula E season three has begun and the first race was contested in Hong Kong on October 10. Season two winner, Sebastien Buemi began his title defence with an impressive win at Hong Kong ePrix. The Renault e.dams driver started from the fifth position and went on to win the race.
Lucas di Grassi in his ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport finished in second place. Mahindra Racing's Nick Heidfeld secured third place in the opening round of 2016-2017 Formula E Championship. Last season's opener also witnessed same drivers in similar podium positions.
Hong Kong ePrix was filled with drama and at one point the winners did not seem to stand a chance. Nelson Piquet Jr., Oliver Turvey, and Sam Bird seemed likely to hold on to their podium places. A safety car situation changed the entire complexion of 2016 Hong Kong ePrix.
Luckily Buemi, Grassi, and Heidfeld decided to halt and change cars much before others. This was a huge gamble as their second stint would be longer than the first. Fortunately, the safety car provided them with track position thus, providing all three with a huge benefit.
Next Formula E race will be contested in Marrakesh, Morocco, on November 12, 2016. This is the first time Formula E paddock will head out for Marrakesh ePrix. Formula E has a huge advantage as all their races are contested on street circuits, so potential race destination is unimaginable.
