The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has ordered 250 Smart ForTwo cars to use as patrol cars on the streets of the Big Apple.
The NYPD Smart ForTwo will use the regular car's rear engine rear wheel-drive layout.
The 898cc turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine cranks out 88bhp and 135.5Nm of torque.
The car is available with manual and automatic gearbox options, with the automatic the most likely choice for the cops.
The NYPD Smart ForTwo's feature the usual police decals on the exterior with what must be the smallest light bar fitted on a cop car (which support the iconic blue and red strobe lights) patrolling the streets of the 'City That Never Sleeps'.
In addition to this the cars feature the police radio as well.
The new SmartForTwo patrol cars will replace the three wheeled GO-4 police carts currently used by the NYPD and will be used to by NYPD officers primarily in traffic enforcement.
Unlike the GO-4 carts they replace, the Smart ForTwo feature modern amenities like air conditioning (which should be a welcome relief for the officers inside) along with safety tech like airbags.
Smart USA has already delivered 100 of the 250 vehicles ordered to the NYPD.
However, don't expect them to start chasing down crims on the streets of New York City any time soon and don't expect to get a ride in one if you get caught.
