Nico Rosberg made the most of his pole position at the Baku City Circuit. Nobody was capable of challenging him at turn one, which meant that once again it would be a battle of pit strategies that would determine the final outcome of the podium.
Scuderia Ferrari had asked Sebastian Vettel to pit in on the eight lap. The German refused to do so and extended his stint on the tyres to lap 20th. Kimi Raikkonen on the other obeyed the team and engineers for a fresher set of tyres.
Eventually, it turned out to be the right choice by Vettel, who finished the race 16.6 seconds behind Rosberg. It seemed like Raikkonen too would secure the last podium place, however, an ERS issue and a five-second penalty for crossing the pit entry line ruined his podium chance.
Force India won themselves another podium as Raikkonen's loss of power meant that Sergio Perez caught up with him on the last lap. Kimi finally settled into to fourth place and survived a final push from fifth place Valtteri Bottas who tried to gain additional points.
Lewis Hamilton did not experience an easy race as he admitted that majority of his race was spent staring at the steering wheel. Since radio communication is banned, engineers could not help Lewis Hamilton with the issue and eventually ruined his race.
