The marque is a division of the German car company Daimler Ag and is one of the most respected and recognised brands in the world. The company's headquarters is in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg.
Daimler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche told Automotive News, "We will achieve it this year, four years ahead of time." He also said the company would achieve the feat four years ahead of time, thanks to brands like Mercedes-Benz.
Zetsche announced this objective of the brand in 2011 and then, he said everyone laughed at the announcement. If the marque is able to achieve the target it will dethrone BMW. Mercedes-Benz lost its crown back in 2005.
In the first ten months of 2016, Mercedes-Benz sales grew to 12 percent to 1.71 million vehicles. The sales of the rivals, BMW and Audi grew to 5.5 percent to 1.64 million units and 4.2 percent to 1.5 million units respectively.
Ola Källenius, Daimler AG board member for sales and marketing said, "With double-digit growth since the beginning of the year, we surpassed last year's total unit sales by the Mercedes-Benz brand already in November. This makes 2016 a new record year for Mercedes-Benz."
According to Daimler Mercedes-Benz was the brand with the highest number of luxury car sales in the USA, Mexico, Switzerland, Austria, Japan, Taiwan, France, Germany and Canada. It is also about to win the U.S. luxury sales title as it sold 18,000 units more than Lexus and 28,000 vehicles more than BMW in the country.
