Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Crosses A Milestone
When the Maruti Ertiga was launched back in 2012, many thought it might not be the best bet against the Toyota Innova in the MPV segment. Toyota had set a benchmark in the segment and the Innova went on to dominate it.
India's largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki positioned and priced the Ertiga with a competitive Rs. 5 to 10 lakh, which changed the game plan. Four years since its launch, the sales number of the Ertiga has crossed 2.75 lakh units in the domestic market.
The sales have been high despite the trend of SUVs in the market and not MPVs. Maruti Ertiga and the Toyota Innova Crysta are the only MPVs doing some good numbers in terms of sales.
Maruti Ertiga comes with the option of petrol, diesel and a mild hybrid version of the diesel unit. The Smart Hybrid Vehicle from Suzuki (SHVS) enjoys the government subsidy on the FAME India initiative to promote hybrid and electric vehicles.
Many of the car manufacturers were contemplating launching an MPV from their portfolio, however, it has been shelved due to the current market trend on compact SUVs. Maruti, however, will benefit from this and the Ertiga is expected to continue its run from the sales point of view.
