Mahindra Scorpio & XUV5OO Working On Downsized 1.9-litre Diesel Engine
Mahindra & Mahindra is the leading manufacturer in the SUV segment in India. With the recent sale ban of diesel vehicles over 2,000cc in the Delhi-NCR region, Mahindra is the worse affected. The Scorpio and XUV5OO by Mahindra are popular products and are banned from being sold in the Delhi-NCR region.
Now, if the ban continues Mahindra is preparing a solution for their Scorpio and XUV5OO. The Indian manufacturer could downsize its current diesel engines, which would comply with the ban in the Delhi-NCR region. Currently, the Scorpio and XUV5OO is powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk engine.
The downsized engine will be significantly smaller in both SUVs. Surprisingly, Mahindra is confident that the performance on offer will be identical to previous diesel engines. Maximum performance will be extracted from the new 1.9-litre diesel engine by Mahindra engineers.
Initially, only the Scorpio will be provided with the new 1.9-litre diesel engine. Mahindra has already developed a prototype, which is approved by Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). Based on customer response, the XUV5OO will receive the new engine.
Mahindra currently offers its Scorpio in international markets with a petrol engine. A possibility exists of introducing this engine option in the Indian market as well. The likeliness of a petrol engine in an SUV for India is bleak as most owners associate SUV with torquey diesel engines.
