Hyundai has been working on a sub-four-metre compact SUV soon after the launch of the Creta. The compact SUV will be pitted against Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and it is one of the most crucial product for the Korean car maker.

Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Hyundai Motor India, Rakesh Srivastava said, "Our immediate future is also to focus on the SUV segment where we will bring a new product." He also stated that the compact SUV will hit the market in early 2019.

Previously, Hyundai had showcased the HND-14 Carlino concept at the 2016 Auto Expo and the upcoming SUV will be based on the same platform. It is expected that the production version of the SUV will feature the design cues of new i30 hatchback and Tucson SUV

The QXi is expected to be a stretched version of the i10 platform and will share many components from the i20 and Creta. Apart from the engine of i20, the compact SUV will also get the 1-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

The 1-litre engine is expected to deliver a power output of 118bhp which will make the compact SUV slightly leaned towards performance. The three-cylinder engine is already in use in the international spec i20 sold in global markets.

Hyundai India is speculating to introduce its maiden Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) car in 2018. So, the upcoming SUV may be equipped with the AMT gearbox. The compact SUV will take on the likes of Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and Mahindra TUV 300.
