The Central Government has allowed the conversion of old vehicles into electric vehicles through retrofitting.
The road transport and highways ministry issued a notice which permits the retrofitting of the kits on Wednesday, Jul 13.
To enable this change, the government will start certifying manufacturers of hybrid kits who will then issue a list of licensed installers for their kits.
A government official told ET Auto, "We want more polluting BS II and BS III vehicles to be converted. We'll also ask heavy industries ministry to incentivise people going for retro fitting under its national electric mobility mission."
The road transport and highways ministry recently held a meeting with global automotive technology companies Bosch and Cummins asking them to provide the retrofitting technology.
The government will actively encourage manufacturers to provide hybrid kits as it aims to curb high pollution levels across the country.
The expected price of the hybrid kits is around Rs. 1 lakh though that price could go down if more of these kits are produced.
