France To Penalise Carmakers For Exceeding CO2 Emissions

By Sukesh

France Budget Minister Christian Eckert has stated that France may seek compensation from car manufacturers whose vehicles exceeds carbon dioxide emission under normal driving condition.

Speaking to lawmakers at the National Assembly Ecker said that government legal services are planning to take action to recover lost tax from car manufacturers, whose vehicles should have imposed with higher penalties at the time of sale.

France penalises carmakers over emission

The Volkswagen diesel emission scandal which broke a year ago triggered worldwide investigations including France and other countries. Besides the NOx emissions exceeding the limit, investigations have revealed a gap in claimed CO2 output and actual fuel efficiency.

France has come up with a scheme called as "bonus-malus." Under this package cars with lower CO2 emissions and fuel consumption will get benefited from sales subsidies, which are funded by penalties collected from less efficient cars based on CO2 emitted per kilometer.
