Ford Enters Ride Sharing Service; Acquires Chariot Shuttle And To Launch GoBike
Ford Smart Mobility LLC is teaming with some of the major cities in an effort to find solutions concerning congestion and mobility in cities around the world. The American automaker has acquired Chariot, a crowd-sourced shuttle service to provide affordable and convenient transportations.
The company is also collaborating with Motivate which operates bicycle sharing service with the upcoming launch of the new Ford GoBike to provide transportation options for resident and visitors in the cities. Ford will also establish a new City Solutions team to work with cities around the world on transportation solutions.
With nearly half of the world population living in cities, Ford believes that by 2030 it will grow to 60 percent. This will lead to challenges on transportation and congestions in the city, Ford wants to be part of the solution in bringing better and convenient transportation.
Chariot operates about 100 Ford Transit shuttles and its routes are crowd-sourced based on rider demand. Chariot's shuttle service complements mass transport by filling the gap between buses and taxis. The bicycle will be another service which is another solution in future mobility, Ford will launch the GoBike by collaborating with Motivate and working with city officials to add new stations and increase the number of GoBikes to 7000 by the end of 2018.
The company's new City Solutions team will work with cities to expand mobility services around the world as part of Ford Mobility LLC. The team will research on the reality of each city's transportation ecosystem and challenges faced. Ford City Solutions will work with local municipalities to pilot, propose and develop solutions for mobility and to be tailor-made for the community.
