Chevrolet showcased the Spin MPV at the recently concluded Auto Expo 2016. They are looking to enter the space of the well placed Maruti Ertiga.
Let's take a comparison route to see how both will rival each other.
Petrol - Rs. 8,45,577 (Manual); Rs. 8,29,263 (Automatic)
Diesel - Rs. 9,28,363 (Manual); No Automatic Variant
Expected Price: Rs. 8,00,000 To Rs. 11,00,000
Note: Prices are for the top variant, ex-showroom (Delhi)
The Spin sports a hexagonal grille upfront and a large swept back headlamps and fog lamps at the bumper section. The rear of the MPV with the taillights look like it was ripped off a Mercedes design. The Ertiga comparitively smaller grille, with a lot chrome detailing.
The width of 1,735 mm and height of 1,664 mm compared to 1,685 mm of width and height of 1,695 mm of Maruti's Ertiga definitely helps in the seating spaciousness for the Chevrolet's Spin.
Even the length of the Spin is much bigger compared the Ertiga. This will be a major factor when seating at the third row of the Spin.
Most of the Spin design shows that Chevrolet is competing with Ertiga than with any other players in this segment. Even the boot space is as constrained as the Ertiga.
Maruti Ertiga has recently launched the new Ertiga with updated features like the touch-screen navigation infotainment system, steering wheel controls for voice command, and call pickup switches as well.
A start/stop button has been added to the MPV and a second row mobile phone charging port for the passengers.
The Chevrolet Spin will sport most of these features and the company could add some more features to edge the Ertiga out. The recently showcased MPV had touch-screen navigation infotainment system, leather upholstery and automatic gearbox laid out very well, these are seen only on the top of the variant MPV.
1.4litre petrol engine (91.1bhp @6,000rpm, 130Nm @4,000, 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic)
1.3litre diesel engine (88.5bhp @4,000rpm, 200Nm @1,750, 5-speed manual, Smart Hybrid Technology)
1.2/1.5/1.8litre petrol engine (85bhp @5,600rpm, 115Nm @4,000, 5-speed manual, 1.5litre has an automatic gearbox)
1.3litre diesel engine (74bhp @4,000rpm, 190Nm @1,750, 5-speed manual)
Maruti claims 17.5km/l (manual) and 17km/l (automatic) as mileage for the petrol variant and the diesel variant runs for 24.5km/l.
The Ertiga comes with dual airbags at the front and ABS as standard for all the variants except for the base variant LXi. The LXi (O) has the option to add these safety features to the base variant.
The Chevrolet Spin has most these options only on the top of variant and not on the mid-variant as well.
Note: All the features, specs and engine details are taken from the Spin's offering in Indonesia.
Chevrolet is again looking to enter the MPV market after its poor sales of Enjoy which the Ertiga beat it hands down. The company will look to price the vehicle aggressively and will also all a lot of features if its looking to take on Maruti's Ertiga.
Maruti has again proven that they can offer vehicles at any segment and they have beaten or chewed into the sales of the Toyota's Innova, simply because its of pricing and targetting the family oriented customers.
The Spin can hurt the Ertiga if its positioned with a whole lot of features and pricing it accordingly. The compacy needs to be strong in the post-sales services to take on the mighty Maruti. The MPV will be launched during the festival season during October - November, 2016.
