Diesel engine technology has taken leaps in terms of technology and has become more reliable and lower in maintenance, this has led to lower pricing as well. Here is a list of cheapest diesel cars in India in 2016.
Mahindra KUV100
The 'Young SUV' as called by Mahindra, has been positioned with the Swift, Grand i10 and Ford Figo. The KUV100 is the first attempt by Mahindra to foray into the small hatchback segment and it has received a good response in India.

Mahindra has developed a new diesel engine for the KUV100, which is powered by the mFalcon G80 series, this is an 1198cc engine which develops 82bhp and maximum torque of 115Nm.
Price: Rs. 5.48 lakh to Rs. 7.10 lakh ex-showroom (Delhi)
Chevrolet Beat
Chevrolet was one among the first to offer diesel car in the small hatchback segment which was preferred choice of many young buyers in India. The Chevy Beat was preferred over the Tata Indica due to its 'Taxi' image.

The Beat is powered by a smaller 936cc diesel engine, churning out 56bhp and 142.5Nm of max torque.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio
The Celerio is not that a great looker in design, however, it is practical, small, ease of driving and good pricing helped it along with the assurance of the brand 'Maruti', the Celerio is preferred choice by many in the country.

The Maruti Celerio is powered by a 998cc diesel engine and produces 67bhp with a max torque of 90Nm.

Tata Indica
Tata was the first to enter the diesel small hatchback segment and started off as a hit with its lower priced diesel car. Over time, it lost its image as the personal car and moved to the role of a 'taxi' car.

The Tata Indica's unit is powered by a bigger 1396cc diesel engine and develops 70bhp of power and a max torque of 140Nm.

Tata Tiago
The recently launched Tata Tiago is the cheapest diesel car to buy in the country, however, this will be an inaugural offer and the price might not remain the same. The Tiago has impressed one and all with the features and most of all 'the design'.
Tata has powered the Tiago with a 1047cc diesel engine, which punches out 69bhp and 140Nm of torque.
