Button Signs 2-Year McLaren Deal; Vandoorne & Alonso Teammates For 2017
Jenson Button has signed a two-year contract with McLaren-Honda. Surprisingly, the British driver will not be competing in the Formula One 2017 Championship. Button will be taking a break from active competition and will play the role of test driver and reserve driver at McLaren.
Fernando Alonso has one more year in his contract with McLaren-Honda. The Spaniard is hoping that his team can deliver a competitive machine for the 2017 Formula One season.
Stoffel Vandoorne will be replacing Jenson Button for the 2017 Formula One season. The Belgian-born racer had previously filled in for injured Fernando Alonso at McLaren. He is their current test/ reserve driver and has showcased tremendous potential in his previous outing.
McLaren-Honda has created a unique opportunity for itself. Button's popularity will be utilised for Brand Ambassador's role for McLaren-Honda. He can also return to racing in the 2018 Championship, in case Fernando Alonso decided to quit Formula One altogether.
Alonso is clearly unhappy with Formula One and the way it is being organised. In his opinion, when drivers are racing that should be their only focus. Saving tyres, fuel, engine, and other components should not hamper performance.
