BMW Might Consider 1 Series Sedan For India
BMW’s first front-wheel-drive sedan when launched in India, will compete with Mercedes CLA and Audi A3 sedan.
BMW's 1 Series Sedan is the company's first sedan with front-wheel-drive and has gone on sale in China. The BMW 1 Series sedan is made in association with Chinese carmaker, Brilliance Automotive Ltd.
The 1 Series sedan from the German luxury carmaker has been tailor-made and designed specifically for the Chinese market. Much before the sedan was fully developed, the new 1 Series sedan would not be sold in any other markets.
However, now that the new sedan has been seen by representatives and stakeholders in various markets, BMW seems to have had a change of heart.
BMW said that they have not decided if the 1 Series sedan will be sold in China only, currently, it has been designed for and is currently only produced in China.
Emerging markets like India have shown keen interest as well according sources in BMW, also, there are reports that BMW is looking to at doing some higher-powered versions of the 1 Series sedan for the European market.
For India, the BMW 1 Series will fit perfectly in the company's line-up in India. BMW in India is the only other luxury carmaker selling the hatchback version in this segment. Mercedes-Benz in India sells the A-class hatchback and the CLA sedan, while Audi sells the sedan version of the A3.
The BMW 1 Series sedan measures 4,456mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,670mm and is shorter compared to the CLA yet longer than the A3.
On the design front, the 1 Series sedan is typical BMW, with its muscular bonnet and kidney grille. As for the interiors, there's the white-on-black dials, a driver-focused central console and an 8.8-inch iDrive screen.
As for the power to the BMW 1 Series sedan, there are various options while the pick of it is the 230bhp 125i paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Also, there is the 190bhp 120i which is likely to be the mainstay of the sedan.
There is no diesel option on the BMW 1 Series sedan, but looking at some of the emerging markets, diesel could be offered as well. If launched in India, the BMW 1 Series sedan will start with a price tag of Rs 35 lakh.
