The GenX Nano currently comes equipped with an optional AMT gearbox. Approximately 40 percent of the bookings are for the AMT option. Supply from Magneti Marelli is slow while the demand is high and waiting period is on the rise.

In an attempt to lower the waiting period for the popular GenX Nano in India, Tata Motors plans to domestically manufacture the AMT unit. Currently, only the Zest and GenX Nano features the AMT option. Tata plans to introduce the AMT option in several models, including the Zica hatchback.

Magneti Marelli currently provides its AMT unit to several automobile manufacturers in India. A manufacturing unit has been set up in Manesar that will cater to India's need. Supply being a major concern, once that is resolved, waiting period will decrease and more people could opt for it.

The new AMT option could be introduced in several Tata products by 2016. Zica hatchback could be the first model to receive the domestically manufactured AMT. Pricing could be lowered along with the quicker availability of the practical AMT option in vehicles.
