Mahindra Scorpio & XUV5OO Petrol Engine On Cards For Delhi Market
The Delhi Government will be implementing a ban on the sale of diesel vehicles in the city from January 1, 2016. The ban on the sale of diesel vehicles will be on engines larger than 2,000cc. No manufacturer can sell diesel vehicles in Delhi NCR till March 31, 2016, at which point another decision will be taken on either lifting or maintaining a ban.
Mahindra and Mahindra seem to be the worse affected as most of their popular products are powered by diesel engines. The Scorpio and the XUV500 are powered by 2.2-litre diesel engines.
A majority of Mahindra's sale come from Delhi, which roughly accounts for two percent of total sales. Mahindra's portfolio is dominated by diesel engines and only lately they have planned to introduce a petrol option for the upcoming KUV100.
Internationally, Mahindra and Mahindra offers petrol as well as diesel engine options. At a recent conference, Mahindra officials confirmed that the International Scorpio with petrol engine could be offered in Delhi if there is a market. The same engine can also be used in their XUV5OO model.
Mahindra currently exports Scorpio with a 2.2-litre, petrol, turbo-engine. The engine produces 140bhp along with 280Nm of torque. Scorpio with a petrol engine is readily available, however, Mahindra Automotive will not take any decision in haste and will wait till March 31, 2016.
