Is BMW Building A ‘Yet To Be Named’ Car To Take On Tesla Model S?
Tesla presently holds the crown in the electric vehicle segment. The cars made by them are completely electric and it delivers unmatched power and range.
It seems like this is worrying the German carmaker BMW as the company is now in plans to build a car to directly take on Tesla, but it is still to name the car.
BMW, using the 5 Series platform is throwing in additional batteries and electric motors as a solution. The car might most likely be called the i5 or the i7.
The powerhouse of the i5 or the i7 will have two electric motors, one to power each axle and a 245 horsepower, 4-cylinder internal combustion engine. The total power estimate will be around 544 horsepower.
Although the new BMW i5 or the i7 will have an "i" prefix, it will not have anything much in common with the i3 and the i8 models.
The car will most likely have an all electric range of 80 miles and the internal combustion engine will be more of a range extender.
Using a gasoline engine to compete with an all electric car like the Tesla may not be a fair game from BMWs end, but let time decide if it was a good move.
