So how do automakers stand? Here is a look at top five most valued car brands:

5. Volkswagen:
It may be in the news for breaking customer's trust and installing software devices that can detect and cheat emission tests. But that was not enough to take the carmaker off this list. In spite of all the drama, and posting a 9 percent drop, the German carmaker is valued at USD 12,545 million. This is enough to get recognized as the fifth best valued car brand in the world.

4. Honda:
Japanese carmaker Honda takes the fourth spot. Having posted growth of 6 percent, the company's total value stands at USD 22,975 million. The Honda Civic has been the company's best seller, having sold over 16,500,000 units over the period of 34 years.

3. Mercedes-Benz:
Taking the third spot is German carmaker, Mercedes-Benz. The brand has grown 7 percent, and its current value stands at USD 36,711 million. The brand's name was, and still is synonymous to luxury in India. The carmaker has beaten Audi, which is not in the top 5 list at all. In India, the carmaker is looking to become the best luxury brand, and looking at how the company is doing, it will be at the top in no time.

2. BMW:
BMW has marginally beat its fellow German rival by posting 9 percent growth. The company came under the scanner after VW was caught, but managed to get out clean. BMWs brand value currently stands at USD 37,212 million.

1. Toyota:
Japanese carmaker tops the list. Toyota faced stiff competition from VW, but now, the diesel emission scandal just cleared the way for Toyota, helping it register growth of 16 percent since last year. Not only that, the brand value is now at USD 49,048 million! That's a lot!
