Audi R8 Set To Swap V8 for 5-cylinder Turbocharged Motor

Audi looks all set to replace its 4.2-litre V8 engine in the R8 with a heavily modified version of the RS3's turbocharged 2.5-litre 5-cylinder TFSI motor.

The 2.5-litre motor in the RS3 produces 362bhp but with R8 e-tron expected to produce 456bhp, the RS3's motor will have to be heavily tinkered with to exceed the e-tron's power output. Another option for the Ingolstad carmaker is to mate the engine with an electric motor.

However, the new motor is not expected to enter production for over a year, whether or not Audi adds a hybrid element to its powertrain. When it does hit production it will slot in under the V10 R8 models. Audi is expected to use the 5-cylinder unit to target the sub $1,50,000 supercar segment.
