Volkswagen Awarded Engine Of The Year For TSI Engine

By Rajkamal

Volkswagen received the esteemed "Engine of The Year Award" again for its 1.4-litre TSI engine. Being awarded the honour for the ninth time in a row for the 1.0 to 1.4-litre category, the engine sets new standards in engine building technology.

The TSI engines, despite being small cubic capacity wise, produce very good power which only bigger capacity engines normally manage to produce. These engines are available in two variants, 90 PS and 300 PS.

The first engines which were made in 2006 used twin chargers (award winners again), produced 140 PS and 170 PS with the help of an additional turbocharger, and were very torquey yet efficient at the same time. These engines continue to power the Beetle, Jetta, Eos, Golf Cabriolet, Touran, Tiguan, Passat and Sharan even now.

The latest addition to the TSI family is the new 1.0-litre engine which produces 90 ps in the new Polo TSI BlueMotion. This 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine will be launched during the second half of this year. The new engine is identical to the previous 1.0-litre engine but with lower co2 emissions.

In addition, VW's ACT or Active Cylinder Management Technology, enables further reduction of fuel consumption by turning off one or two cylinders temporarily when not needed.

The award was presented to VW at Stuttgart to Carsten Helbing, Head of Application, EA888 at VW's Engine Development Division on Wednesday.
