Vespa GTS Gets ABS, Traction Control & Multimedia System
Vespa GTS, the most powerful scooter sold by the Italian two wheeler maker, has been updated with a slew of technological upgrades which includes ABS, traction control, a new Enhanced Sliding Suspension (ESS) and Vespa Multimedia Platform.
Sold both in the U.S. and Europe, the GTS is offers performance and features in a premium package and costs less than the 946. Here is a rundown of all that's new in the GTS.

The ABS system uses sensors to measure the vehicle speed and how fast the front and rear tyres are spinning. Using these data the system signals a two-channel hydraulic control unit to engage and disengage ABS, preventing wheel lockup and sliding.
ESS system works with the traditional Vespa single-sided front suspension, but with modifications. The shock absorber is now fixed to the trailing arm with a hinged pin instead of being bolted on rigidly. This setup is said to improve rider comfort as well as halving sliding friction.
Lastly, the Piaggio Multimedia Platform makes it way to the GTS as the Vespa Multimedia Platform. This allows a smartphone to be paired to the on-board system, which then displays a range of useful, real-time information on the device.
Besides speed, rpm, fuel economy, the system will also display power and torque figures, tyre air pressure and tire wear data as well as allowing the smartphone to be used as GPS. A USB port in the front compartment keeps the phone charged.
Vespa GTS and GTS Super, the two variants of the scooter, are powered by the same 278cc single-cylinder four-valve engine rated at 22 horsepower at 7500 rpm and 21.69 Nm torque at 5000 rpm, in the U.S.
Piaggio, which was the first company to offer the above mentioned safety features in scooters, already provides some of these with the Vespa 946, the Primavera and Sprint models. While Piaggio intends to launch the Vespa 946 in India, which is expected to cost as much as INR 8 lakh, we feel it would make a lot more sense to launch the GTS instead.
Not only will the GTS cost a lot less than the 946, it is also larger and has a more powerful engine. Aspects that buyers in India give a lot of importance to when buying. A 125cc scooter that costs as much as a 800cc sports bike just does not sound right.
