Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota was recently in news, as it wants to compete in the mass segment. It was reported that they would be aided by Daihatsu to develop an all new small car for the Indian customers.
Currently the Indian small car segment is dominated by fellow Japanese manufacturer Maruti Suzuki and their Alto K10. Hyundai's Eon is also doing well, along with Tata Motors Nano. These vehicles are small in size, however, they pack several goodies inside.
Toyota offers its Aygo model in European countries and is their small car offering. The Euro-spec hatchback is feature rich. We believe Toyota and Daihatsu could use this platform and strip it down on features to introduce it at an affordable price in India.
The Japanese manufacturers Aygo sports a peppy 1.0-litre petrol powered engine. It is capable of producing 68 bhp of maximum power, along with 95 Nm of peak torque. It is front wheel drive hatchback and is paired to a 5-speed gearbox and also offers an AMT option.
Toyota India currently offers the Etios Liva, Etios Cross, Etios, Corolla Altis, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, Innova, Fortuner and Prado models. Most of these products have not struck a chord with Indian buyers, except for the Innova, which has been a hit since day one.
The major hurdle ahead of Japanese manufacturer Toyota is the pricing of this hatchback. In order to make their offering a lucrative buy, they should make it an affordable option. To achieve this they will omit several creature comfort features and localise major components for its Aygo.
