Tesla Motors Delivers First Cars In China, Local Production Confirmed
After a long delay, Tesla Motors has delivered its first batch of eight Model S electric cars in China. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors revealed that deliveries were intentionally delayed because adequate charging infrastructure was not in place.
Tesla Model S is has a price tag of 7,55,040 Chinese Yuan or $121,00 whereas, the original cost the Model S in the U.S. is $81,000 (5,05,440 Chinese Yuan). The additional cost makes up for the import tax.

Musk said that they intend to begin production of Tesla products in China, but revealed that it would take 3-4 years to do so.
While the Chinese government has plans to increase the number of electric cars in the country, it has a strange law that discourages foreign manufacturers from launching their electric cars.
An outsider like Tesla can only produce electric in China, if it gives a local partner ownership of technology. Naturally, most electric car makers such as Tesla, GM and Nissan have stuck to importing their products, which increases their cost.
While no solid plans are in place regarding local manufacturing, before doing so Tesla has to tackle the challenge of setting up a solid charging infrastructure. A large part of Tesla's investment in China will be towards setting charging stations, which would be hundreds of millions of dollars.
Tesla's Chinese headquarters is among the few places in the country with charging stations. At present, most of these are concentrated in a few major cities.
